Wildfire Ravaging Mt. Kilimanjaro's Unique Ecosystem

A huge wildfire is ravaging Mt. Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystem, reported some media on October 16, 2020. The wildfire is said to have erupted on October 11, 2020, along the famous Marangu Route between Horombo Hut and Mandara Hut.
By October 15, 2020, the wildfire was still uncontrolled by firefighters and had spread to an area with an estimated diameter of 3 kilometers, according to the reports. The fire is said to have started accidentally by tourists while warming up food.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania and Africa’s highest mountain with a snow-capped summit throughout the year. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, one experiences a unique ecosystem entailing five climatic zones that stretch from the entry gates to the mountain summit. Starting from the entry gates, the zones are as thus: tropical farmland, tropical rain forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and Arctic climatic zone.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania’s major tourist attractions.
