US soldier Travis King (23) who ditched the US Army stationed in South Korea and fled to neighboring North Korea did that to escape racism in the US Military. That was said in a statement by North Korea through its state media body and reported by various world media on August 16, 2023.
More specifically, North Korea reportedly said that Travis King crossed into its territory because of inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination in the US Military, as well as non-inclusiveness in the US society. As such, the official statement continued, Travis King has expressed his wish for refuge in North Korea or a third country.
Travis King abandoned a guided tour in South Korea on July 18, 2023, and crossed into North Korea through the heavily guarded Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). He was immediately arrested and taken away by North Korean security forces.
