US Senate on the afternoon of February 13, 2021 (local time) acquitted former US President Donald Trump in a second impeachment trial. The Senate voted 57 – 43 to acquit the Make America Great Again former president. All 50 Democratic senators and 7 Republican senators voted for conviction while 43 Republican senators voted against conviction. At least 67 guilty votes were needed to convict the ex-president.
Ex-President Trump was charged of alleged incitement of insurrection. His defense team, however, maintained throughout the five-day trial that the impeachment attempt was unconstitutional, politically motivated, and driven by hate and political vengeance.
The landmark second impeachment trial acquittal implies Donald Trump is eligible to run for US presidency one more time in 2024.
