Uganda’s Bobi Wine’s Prominent Lawyer Arrested

Africa | Uganda December 23, 2020

Uganda’s opposition presidential nominee Bobi Wine’s lawyer has been arrested, reported some media. According to the reports, the prominent human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo was arrested on December 22, 2020 and charged of, among others, money laundering.

Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo represented Bobi Wine during his recent arrest and court appearance in the capital Kampala following deadly clashes between heavily armed police and his supporters in the city and other parts of the country in November 2020. The supporters were protesting over his arrest in nearby city of Jinja, for allegedly breaching the country’s covid-19 restrictions. At least 37 people were reportedly massacred during the brutal police crackdown.

The arrest of his lawyer now has been lambasted by human rights groups worldwide as arbitrary and politically motivated.
