Uganda Launches Construction Of Its First Electrified SGR Line With Its Own Funds
Uganda has launched construction of its first electrified standard gauge railway (SGR) line that will connect the city of Kampala and the Kenyan border town of Mulaba. That was announced by the State House there in a recent press release. According to the press release, the launch was made by President Yoweri Museveni at a ceremony held in Tororo on November 21, 2024.
The new electrified SGR line, known as Kampala-Mulaba SGR, will stretch 272 kilometres through 10 settlements, namely, Tororo, Butaleja, Namutumba, Luuka, Iganga, Mayuge, Jinja, Buikwe, Mukono, and Wakiso. The launch of its construction follows signing of a deal by the government of Uganda and the Turkish construction firm Yapi Merkezi in mid October 2024, by which Yapi Merkezi will construct the electrified SGR line at a cost of $3 billion. The construction is expected to take 48 months.
Reportedly, construction of the electrified Kampala-Mulaba SGR is funded entirely by taxpayers and some local financial institutions.
