Tanzania’s chief public prosecutor on March 4, 2022, dropped all terrorism charges against the country’s main opposition leader Freeman Mbowe, reported some Tanzanian media. Accordingly, Mr Mbowe is now free after about 7 months of incarceration. Similar charges against three other people who were standing trial with the prominent opposition leader have also been dropped.
The arrest and trial of Mr Mbowe have been castigated both locally and internationally as been politically motivated and had raised doubts about whether the country’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan is keen to restore democratic values, rule of law, and human rights in Tanzania.
The release of Mr Mbowe from incarceration is great news for Tanzania’s multi-party democracy and its development at large. It is also likely to increase considerably the popularity of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2022 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
