Tanzania’s Prominent Opposition Politician Tundu Lissu Returns Home From Belgium
Tanzania’s prominent opposition politician Tundu Lissu on July 27, 2020 returned to his homeland from Belgium, reported some media.
Mr Lissu has been living in Belgium for nearly three years, where he received medical treatment for gunshot wounds he suffered from an assassination attempt on September 7, 2017 in Tanzania’s capital Dodoma. In the assassination attempt, Mr Lissu, a member of parliament then, was reportedly shot 16 times as he arrived at official residence in the capital, to enjoy a parliamentary session break. The barbaric assailants are still at large.
On arriving at Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport, Mr Lissu is said to have been welcomed by a large cheering crowd of supporters, despite an earlier warning by police that such crowding would not be tolerated.
Mr Lissu who is a member of Tanzania’s main opposition party called CHADEMA, is reportedly a presidential aspirant, and expected to seek endorsement from his party to be its presidential candidate in the country’s 2020 general elections scheduled for October. If endorsed, Mr Lissu will find himself challenging head-on his arch-foe incumbent President John Magufuli alias the Bulldozer in the impending elections. That could be quite interesting!
President Magufuli is bidding for his second and last term in office.
