Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan on July 19, 2022, fired the country’s police chief Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro. That was reported by some East African media on July 20, 2022.
Simon Sirro was a controversial police chief, allegedly with appalling human rights record. As such, he is said to have been unpopular among human rights groups and the public in general.
Simon Sirro has been succeeded by the country’s Director of Criminal Investigations Camillius Wambura. The latter has been described in some quarters as having a better human rights record than his predecessor.
According to some of the reports, President Samia Hassan made the leadership change in the country’s police force as a move towards ensuring that the force adheres to and respects rights and property of citizens. Within this context, she will also establish a committee for monitoring police performance in the country. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2022 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
