Tanzania's Julius Nyerere International Airport Terminal 3 Completed

Construction of an ultra modern third terminal at Dar es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Tanzania has been completed. The new terminal was reportedly handed over to Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) by the project contractor BAM International, sometimes in May 2019.

According to the reports, since the handover, TAA has been acclimatizing to the new state-of-the-art terminal in various ways including launching from it Air Tanzania inaugural flight to Mumbai, India, in mid July 2019. Official opening of the terminal is expected in August 2019, probably to coincide with arrival of participants to the 39th Ordinary SADC Summit that will be held in Dar es Salaam in August 17-18, 2019.

The completion of JNIA Terminal 3 has been long overdue, following massive delays said to have been caused by various reasons including some project costing and funding issues. The delays may have been economically unhelpful because at the end of the day construction cost of the terminal is said to have increased by some several millions of dollars. As such, by its completion, the cost of building the terminal is said to have had rocketed to $317 million, well above its original cost of $283 million. It is always good economic idea to implement approved development projects as quickly as possible.

JNIA Terminal 3 allows 24 wide body passenger jets to park at the same time, and has capacity for handling 6 million passengers per year. The terminal will cater for international flights, while domestic flights will be catered by JNIA Terminal 2. The latter is expected to be refurbished soon, also by BAM International.

Currently JNIA has an annual traffic volume of 2.5 million passengers. However, this figure is bound to rise very quickly if the country's economic boom continues. Also to contribute, is reported rapid increase in number of tourists into the country.
