Tanzania Orders 200 000 Burundian Refugees To Go Home Despite Personal Safety Concerns

The government of Tanzania has given 200 000 Burundian refugees until October 1, 2019 to go back home, reported numerous media on August 28, 2019.

According to the reports, failure by the refugees to comply with the ultimatum, will result in forceful repatriation despite contravening the United Nations refugees convention that prohibits such kind of repatriation of refugees and to which Tanzania is a signatory.

The representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Tanzania is said to be concerned about the decision of the government of Tanzania. The representative reportedly indicated the political circumstances in Burundi that compelled the refugees to flee their homeland have not significantly changed because new Burundian refugees are still arriving in Tanzania at a rate of 100 refugees per month.

One wonders why fleeing Africans should find it so difficult to settle down in other African countries they love, at a time Africa is proudly talking about building a thriving single market entailing free movement of people and goods.
