Tanzania General Elections 2020 Commence Amid Tense Situation In Zanzibar

Tanzanians on October 28, 2020 went to polling stations to cast their vote in the country’s general elections. The elections are two-tier entailing election of next president and members of parliament.


15 presidential nominees are contesting for the presidential position, with opposition nominees Tundu Lissu and Bernard Membe said to be the main rivals to the incumbent President John Magufuli who is seeking a second and last term in office.


The general elections are taking place amid tense situation in the country’s semi-autonomous islands region of Zanzibar where at least 8 people were reportedly gunned down by police during pre-election protests there on the night leading to October 27, 2020. The leader of the islands’ main opposition party ACT Wazalendo namely Seif Sharif Hamad was also arrested. He was later released.
