Tanzania on June 14, 2024, began operation of commercial train services along completed phase 1 line of its ambitious 1596 kilometer cross-border electrified standard gauge railway (SGR) network project. That was reported by some African media on June 15, 2024.

Phase 1 line of the SGR network project stretches 300 kilometers from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. Commercial train services along the line are said to have begun with a maiden run of an electric passenger train from Dar es Salaam, that travelled at 160 kilometers per hour and carried 1400 people who enjoyed the ride without paying for it. Next time they will have to pay for their journeys though!

The operation of electric SGR train services from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro becomes the first in the East African Community.

Commercial electric SGR train services will be extended to phase 2 line of the SGR network project in the middle of next month, say the reports. Phase 2 line spans from Morogoro to Makutopora via the capital Dodoma.
