Tanzania Amends Controversial Statistics Law
Updated: Jul 9, 2019

In 2018 Tanzania's parliament of which the ruling party holds a majority, amended the country's Statistics Act of 2015, to criminalize publication of statistical data without approval of the government. The resultant amended new law, namely Statistics Acts of 2018, was castigated by the country's opposition parties as well as human rights groups and other organizations including the World Bank, for curtailing freedom of expression, among others.
However, in a move in the right direction, Tanzania's parliament has amended the controversial Statistics Acts of 2018 to allow collection and dissemination of statistical data without criminal consequences. That was reported by some East African media on July 8, 2019.
