Sweden’s PM Stefan Löfven Quits

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has quitted. He quitted on the afternoon of November 10, 2021, after submitting a request for quitting to the country’s speaker of parliament, a formality requirement by the Swedish political system, for prime ministerial stepping down. However, Mr Löfven will continue leading the country under a transition government until a new PM is elected by the parliament.

Stefan Löfven has been Sweden’s PM for seven years. During that period, he survived a record two votes of no confidence.

High on the list of possible new PM to replace Mr Löfven is said to be Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson who was elected leader of the ruling Social Democrats party last week after Mr Löfven stepped down as leader of the party, during the party’s annual congress in the city of Gothenburg.

If elected, Magdalena Andersson will become the first female PM in Sweden’s modern political history.
