Sudan Outlaws Female Genital Mutilation

Updated: Jul 19, 2020

Sudan has finally outlawed female genital mutilation alias FGM, reported some media on May 1, 2020. The criminalization of GFM in Sudan is reportedly made in an amendment of a legislation that makes GFM a criminal offence punishable by up to 3 years in jail.

Hitherto to the criminalization, Sudan was among countries with highest cases of GFM in the world, with up to 90% of its girls and women having undergone genital mutilation. For years human rights groups in Sudan have been fighting against GFM. As such, its criminalization has been applauded as a gigantic milestone in human rights of girls and women in the country.
