President Macky Sall of Senegal has postponed the country's presidential election that was scheduled to be held on February 25, 2024, indefinitely. That was reported by some media on February 3, 2023. The president is said to have cited dispute about presidential nominees for the election as the reason for the postponement.
Senegal has been facing political turmoil prior to and after the beginning of the presidential election campaign. Within this context, many opposition leaders are said to have been excluded from the list of presidential nominees for the election, with some of the opposition leaders currently languishing in jail.
President Macky Sall is currently serving his second and last term in office as required by the country's Constitution. Recently he announced that he will not try to run for an unconstitutional third term after rumors emerged that suggested he intended to do so.
Until now, Senegal has been considered one of the most stable democracies in West Africa, a region that has recently witnessed several military coups triggered largely by flawed democratic systems, violation of Constitutions, and public sector corruption, among other factors.
