Samia Suluhu Hassan Sworn In As Tanzania’s New President

Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as the new president of Tanzania on the morning of March 19, 2021. The former vice president succeeded President John Magufuli who died unexpectedly on March 17, 2021.
A graduate economist, Samia Suluhu Hassan becomes the first female head of state in Tanzania and the second in the East African Community (EAC) regional bloc.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan will serve the remaining second five year presidential term won by the late Dr John Magufuli in the country’s 2020 presidential election, until its expiry in 2025. She may then bid on her own for one more and last term in office in the 2025 presidential election if she chooses to do so and endorsed by the ruling party CCM.
