The government of Rwanda has released Hotel Rwanda movie hero Paul Rusesabagina from jail, reported some media on March 25, 2023.

According to the reports, Paul Rusesabagina (69) was released from jail on March 24, 2023 after his sentence was commuted under a presidential order.

Paul Rusesabagina who is a citizen of Belgium was arrested in 2020 after suddenly appearing in Rwanda under confusing alleged circumstances. The latter include allegations by his family who said that he was kidnapped by Rwandan security agents in Dubai and then ferried by air to Rwanda, while the government of Rwanda refuted that saying he willingly travelled to Burundi where he was arrested and sent to Rwanda.

Notwithstanding, following his arrest, he was put on trial for some charges related to terrorism in a court in the capital Kigali. In September 2021, the court found him guilty of the charges and slapped him with a 25-year jail term.

His arrest, trial, and jail sentence were slammed by his family and human rights activists worldwide as being politically motivated.

Now a free man, Paul Rusesabagina is expected to join his family in USA.
