Return Of Mali’s Military Junta

Military in Mali has arrested the country’s top government officials and presumably took power, reported some media on May 25, 2021. According to the reports, the military there arrested the country’s interim President Bah Ndaw together with the prime minister and minister of defence, and detained them in a military base

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened in Mali in recent times. On August 18, 2020, a group of military officers under the leadership of Colonel Assimi Goita arrested the then President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, detained him in a similar manner, and took power. The ruling military junta, however, later agreed on a 18 month civilian/military transitional government with Bah Ndaw, a former military officer himself, as interim president.

The unexpected return of the military junta in Mali has been strongly condemned by the African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and United Nations.
