Pre-election violence in USA manifested itself clearly after an assassination attempt on ex-President Donald Trump on July 13, 2024 (local time).
According to some USA media on that day, a shooter positioned at a roof top and armed with an automatic rifle, fired multiple shots towards a podium on which ex-President Donald Trump was delivering a powerful speech, at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. One shot is said to have hit the ex-president in his right ear but escaped with just some minor injuries, while one of his supporters was gunned down. Two other people who were also shot, suffered serious injuries, say the reports.
The US Security Service agents are said to have responded promptly to the assassination attempt, spotting and neutralizing the shooter, namely Thomas Matthew Crooks (20), while he was still on the roof top of a building said to be located about 150 yards from the rally venue's podium.
The motive of the assassination attempt on ex-President Donald Trump is currently unknown. However, some Republicans and supporters of the Make America Great Again ex-president have squarely blamed it on the Democrats, saying that the latter have been deliberately advancing noxious divisive rhetoric against ex-President Trump, that encourages political violence. And that may, indeed, be supported by recent claims by the Democrats including the country's incumbent president, that Donald Trump is an existential threat to democracy, with some others even saying that the ex-president only cares about himself.
The appalling demonization of Trump is done despite him been the legitimate leader and presidential nominee of the Republican party, and having got almost 50% electoral mandate in the previous presidential election. Currently, many opinion polls show that ex-president is leading by more than 5% in the race to the White House in 2024/2025.
More generally, one seriously wonders how any ruling party can persistently preach democracy domestically and abroad, while at the same time not respecting its own opposition? Surely, such conception of democracy must be flawed!
