Pope Francis is dead. According to an announcement by the Vatican, he died at his residence in the Vatican City in the morning of April 21, 2025, on Easter Monday. His Holiness was 88.
The extremely popular pontiff's death comes less than a day after he delivered what would be his last speech, during the Easter Mass in the Vatican on April 20, 2025. During the powerful speech he emphasized, among others, the significance of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and respect for each other in society, saying that there can not be peace without freedom. The pontiff's last speech definitely presents a rebuke to oppressive regimes worldwide, that violate individual freedoms of their citizens, while claiming that they do so in order to ensure national peace and unity.
Pope Francis took the papacy throne in March 2013 shortly after his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI stepped down. He was renowned for standing for all the people of the world, Roman Catholics or not, who faced poverty, discrimination, prosecution, as well as other hardships and injustices. He has been described very positively worldwide as humble, empathetic, simple, charismatic, and always happy, among others.

An incredible great person indeed, who reportedly loved Africa.
