Papua New Guinea's Bougainville Votes In Favor Of Independence

Papua New Guinea's region of Bougainville voted in favor of independece in a referundum held during the past couple of weeks, reported some media on december 11, 2019. According to the reports, staggering 97.7% of the people of the region voted for independence.

Notwithstanding, however, the results of the referundum do not imply Bougainville will automatically become a new independent nation. For the latter to happen, Papua New Guinea's parliament will have to ratify the results.
