Malawi’s opposition leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera was inaugurated as the country's new president in the morning of June 28, 2020, reported some media.
Dr Chakwera was on June 27, 2020 declared by the country's electoral commission, the winner of a re-run presidential election held on June 23, 2020. According to the commission. Dr Chakwera won with 58.57% of the vote.
The presidential re-run election followed a historic annulment of the results of the 2019 presidential election by the country’s Constitutional Court over electoral irregularities.
Annulment of presidential election results is extremely rare in Africa, with Kenya as the only other country where such a thing happened when the Supreme Court there did exactly that, annulling the results of the presidential election held on August 8, 2017 citing irregularities and illegalities. In the case of Kenya, however, the opposition presidential candidate did not win the re-run presidential election that was held in October 2017.
