OACPS Requests OHCHR Mission To West Papua Amidst Alleged Human Rights Violations

In a letter to United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) has expressed its concern about alleged violations of human rights in West Papua Province in Indonesia, and requested an urgent OHCHR mission to the province, to get information based by evidence about what is really going on in the province. That was reported by some media on September 7, 2021.

West Papua whose 51% of its inhabitants are people of African descent called Papuan or Aboriginal people of Melanesia, was made a province of Indonesia by European colonialists in the 1960s without considering ethnic and cultural factors. Since then, there have been reported allegations of grave human rights abuses against Papuans in the province by the Indonesian authorities, that include racism, police brutality, and even ethnic cleansing.
