The Non-Aligned Movement Summit 2024 alias 19th Non-Aligned Movement Summit is ongoing at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Kampala, Uganda. The summit is scheduled for January 15 - 20, 2024.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a global group that represents collective identity and aspirations of some 120 countries that are not aligned with or against any other major global bloc, at least in theory. NAM was founded in 1961 in Belgrade, in the then Yugoslavia now Serbia.
During the Cold War, NAM was perceived by many as an organzation of weak economies in terms of national incomes, that were mainly concerned about maintaining neutrality as regards the USA and the Soviet Union.
However, after the Cold War, many NAM countries got stronger income wise and the focus of the group shifted from passive to active roles in global matters, and particularly to opposing what it sees as unacceptable USA and its allies' or the so called West's unilateralism and sometimes neo-imperialistic tendencies at the global stage.
The Non-Aligned Movement Summit 2024 is said to be attended by many heads of state and government, and other senior government officials from NAM member countries, as well as senior representatives from leading multi-national organizations including UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
NAM summits take place after every three years. The country hosting a summit becomes the chaircountry of the group until the next summit.
