Nigeria has a two-tier electoral system entailing presidential and parliamentary elections. In the presidential election voters elect the next president, while in the parliamentary election voters elect members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

As regards the current presidential election, there are 18 presidential nominees vying for the top political position. Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after serving two terms in office. The country’s Constitution permits maximum of two 4-year presidential terms.

The general elections follow an election campaign period that ended on February 23, 2023. The election campaign is said to have been marred by some pre-election violence that includes gunning down of a Senate nominee in Enugu on February 22, 2023.
