Niger Nullifies Military Cooperation Agreement With USA
Africa | Niger March 17, 2024
Niger has nullified military cooperation agreement with USA with immediate effect. That was announced on television on March 16, 2024, by the spokesperson for the country's military regime.
More specifically, in announcing the nullification of the agreement, the spokesperson for the military junta said, among others, that US military presence in Niger was illegal and violates the country's sovereignty. As such, the military cooperation with USA has been nullified with immediate effect.
Under the nullified military agreement that permitted USA to have military presence in Niger, USA established an airbase in Agadez in the northern part of the country, where about 1100 troops were stationed as of 2023. Also operating from the base were drones.
Departing US military from Niger is likely to be replaced by Russian military.
