Mauritius Declares Environmental emergency Over Coastal Oil Spill

Mauritius on August 8, 2020 declared an environmental emergency after colossal amount of crude oil leaked from a grounded oil tanker and spilled into its Indian Ocean coastal waters. That was reported by some media on August 9, 2020.

The oil tanker that belongs to Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines was grounded there on July 15, 2020, with about 4 000 tons of crude oil in its hull. So far about 1 000 tons of the oil has leaked out and spilled into the coastal waters. The latter are said to be rich in coral reef and marine life. The oil spill is therefore bound to have serious environmental and economic consequences to the country.
