Mali Military Junta And Civilians Agrees 18 Month Transition Government

The military junta in Mali on September 12, 2020 reached deal with political and civil society groups for an 18 month transitional government in the country as precursor to general elections. That was reported by some media on September 13, 2020.

According to the reports, the transitional government will entail a president and vice president chosen by the military junta, as well as a transitional council that will perform the role of a legislature. Whether those in the transitional government will be soldiers or civilians is not clear yet, although the country’s main opposition and the regional body ECOWAS are said to prefer civilians.

Mali military junta that is led by Colonel Assimi Goita took power on August 18, 2020 after months of violent protests against the then government of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The junta has since then been under pressure from various regional quarters to return power to civilians as soon as possible.
