Kenya’s Supreme Court Upholds Presidential Election Results

Kenya’s Supreme Court on September 5, 2022, upheld the results of the country’s presidential election that was held on August 9, 2022.

The results of the presidential election were announced by country’s Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) on August 15, 2022, by which the leader of United Democratic Alliance, Vice President William Ruto, was declared the winner with a narrow margin. However, the leader of the rival Kenya’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga, refused to accept the results alleging electoral fraud and filed a petition in the Supreme Court on August 22, 2022, challenging the results.

According to Kenya’s Constitution, the top court’s ruling implies that Vice President William Ruto is now confirmed as the next president of Kenya and will have to be sworn in within 7 days from the date of the ruling.
