Kenya Inaugurates Completed First Berth Of Gigantic Lamu Port

Kenya on May 20, 2021 inaugurated one completed berth of its planned gigantic Lamu Port at Manda Bay in Lamu County, reported some East African media on May 21, 2021. The inauguration that was done by the country’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, was marked by debut docking at the new port of a Maersk cargo vessel MV Cap Carmel.

Lamu Port project is part of an ambitious integrated regional infrastructure program called Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor alias LAPSSET Corridor development program. The latter entails the following projects: Lamu Port, standard gauge railway lines, highways, oil pipelines, oil refinery, 3 airports, and 3 new resort cities, among others. Implementation of the LAPSSET Corridor development program will cost an estimated $23 billion although some other estimates put the cost at a staggering $29 billion.

The inaugurated completed part of the new Lamu Port that entails one berth is said to have costed $2.8 billion. When completed the gigantic new port will consist of 32 berths and become one of Africa’s largest ports. _________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
