Over 22 million registered voters in Kenya are expected to head to polling stations on August 9, 2022, to cast their votes in the country’s general elections. The general elections entail presidential election for the next president, parliamentary elections for members of the Senate alias Upper House and the National Assembly alias Lower House, as well as local elections for members of County Assemblies.
In the presidential election, four presidential nominees are vying for the top political position, namely:
Vice President William Ruto (55) for United Democratic Alliance
Ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga (77) for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance
David Waihiga (38) for Agano Party
Professor George Wajackoyah (63) for Roots Party of Kenya
However, William Ruto and Raila Odinga are said to be the main contenders. For Raila Odinga this run for presidency is his 5th.
Rampant corruption within the public sector is said to have been one of the main political issues during the general elections campaign, with all four presidential nominees vowing to eradicate the malaise if elected. For William Ruto and Raila Odinga, the issue of corruption could have posed great challenge during their campaign, as they had to explain to some curious Kenyans now and then, why they failed to tackle it previously when they had opportunity to do so as vice president and prime minister respectively.
