Kazungula Bridge Over Zambezi River Completed But Not Inaugurated

Construction of Kazungula Bridge over the mighty Zambezi River, was completed in October 2020. The state-of-the-art two-lane road and one-track rail bridge that links Botswana and Zambia, is 923 meters long. Its construction began in 2014 at a cost of $259.3 million. It is a bilateral infrastructure project financed by the governments of Botswana and Zambia. Also provided are two one-stop border facilities, one on each side of the bridge. These facilities are said to have been completed in November 2020.

The bridge is expected to contribute immensely to increased efficiency and convenience in movement of goods and people within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) as well as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) at large.

Notwithstanding, however, despite the completion of Kazungula Bridge, its inauguration that will officially open it for traffic has not yet taken place. What is delaying the inauguration of the bridge that took rather a record long time to construct is not clearly known. Some analysts think the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may have something to do with that!
