Jeremiah Manele Elected Solomon Islands' New PM

Jeremiah Manele was elected Solomon Islands'new prime minister (PM), by the country's parliament on April 2, 2024. The 50-seat parliament voted 31 to 18 in favor of Jeremiah Manele. The parliamentary ballot follows the Pacific Ocean island nation's 2024 General Elections that were held on April 17, 2024, of which no political party won a majority in parliament.
PM elect Jeremiah Manele, a former foreign minister, is said to have vowed to continue and consolidate Solomon Islands' policy of having strong ties with China, that characterized the government of his predecessor PM Manassey Sogavare. Central to the policy, is said to be the believe that strong ties with China is good for the country's development and security. USA and neighboring Australia had previously expressed some controversial concerns about the policy.
