Ivory Coast’s President Quattara Wins Disputed Third Term

Africa | Ivory Coast November 3, 2020

Incumbent President Alassane Quattara of Ivory Coast has won the country’s presidential election held on October 31, 2020. That was announced by the country’s electoral body and reported by various media on November 3, 2020. He won 94% of the vote, according to the reports. The victory gives him a highly disputed third term in office.

The opposition has however squarely rejected the outcome of the election saying Mr Quattara’s bid for a third term in office was unconstitutional hence should not have been allowed. As such they have reportedly formed their own transitional government that would govern the country until new presidential election is held.

Two of the country’s major opposition parties boycotted the election that is said to have been marred by post-election violence that claimed five deaths. Even before the election, about 100 people are said to have been killed in violence triggered by Mr Quattara’s announcement to run for a third term.

A change in the country’s Constitution in 2016 limited the number of presidential terms to two.
