Rest Of The World July 7, 2022

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has quitted following days of political turmoil in Britain. The embattled Oxford educated PM announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7, 2022. However, he said he will continue as PM until the ruling party appoints his successor in Autumn 2022, although, the main opposition Labour Party would like him to go immediately.

One of the greatest political milestones of the PM during his almost 3-year-reign is said to be having BREXIT done and making Britain global again.

Probably Mr Boris Johnson’s downfall could be said to have begun after the iconic “bring your own booze” party held at No 10 amid the corona virus pandemic. The party violated the pandemic restrictions devised by the PM himself. Initially he dismissed the allegations about the party but later admitted that the party had indeed taken place. He was slapped with a fine for it and became the first reigning British PM to break the law. Consequently, a motion of no-confidence against him was tabled to the House of Commons. He, however, survived the vote by defeating it.

After the no-confidence vote, the final blow to the reign of the PM was not far away. He was soon after accused of lying again. This time about been aware of sexual abuse allegations facing a Conservative MP he had promoted. The male MP is said to be alleged of sexual harassment entailing making unwanted touching of some other men’s butts at a leisure club. After the PM finally admitted he made a mistake in promoting the MP, members of his government were not amused. They began resigning one by one, while others told him to go. At the beginning he vowed to stay as PM, but as the number resignations grew to over 50, he succumbed to pressure and quitted.

The charismatic and flamboyant PM seems to have had deep trust of those he appointed to his government and as such expected total loyalty from them. However, a good number of the most senior ones were the first to denounce him through prompt resignations or calls for him to go. Probably feeling grossly betrayed, he reportedly called one of them a “snake”.

Notwithstanding, Mr Boris Johnson has taken his downfall rather gracefully, saying that in politics, no one is remotely indispensable. That is very true! _____________________________ © 2015 - 2022 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
