Guinea’s Presidential Election 2020 Begins

Polling stations in Guinea opened on the morning of October 18, 2020 for the country’s 2020 presidential election.

Incumbent President Alpha Conde (82) is seeking re-election for a third term in office amid criticisms from the opposition over the legality of his bid. Mr Conde’s bid for a third presidential term followed a referendum held on March 22, 2020 by which voters supported an amendment of the country’s Constitution that removed a two-term presidential limit.

The opposition argues the Constitutional amendment was particularly aimed at meeting Mr Conde’s personal desire to bid one more time after expiry of his second and what would have been his last mandate period in office.

Mr Conde is among 12 presidential nominees contesting for the top political position. His main rival, however, is said to be ex-Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo.
