Government Of Niger Overthrown By Military

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Africa | Niger July 27, 2023

The government of Niger has been overthrown by the military. The military coup was announced on the country's national television late at night on July 26, 2023, by a senior army officer flanked by some 9 other officers.

The announcement confirmed rumors of attempted coup that have been swirling earlier during that day, after troops belonging to the Presidential Guards blocked the presidential residence in the capital Niamey, and detained President Mohamed Bazoum inside it.

The miltary in rationalizing the coup, is said to have cited poor governance, and failure of the government to contain deteriorating security situation in Niger.

Niger becomes the 4th West African nation under military rule in recent time. The other 3 nations are Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso.
