Goma Turning Into Ghost Town Over Fears Of New Eruptions Of Nyiragongo Volcano

Africa | Democratic Republic of Congo May 29, 2021

The city of Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is turning into a ghost town as people desert it over fears of new eruptions of nearby Nyiragongo volcano. Activity in downtown Goma particularly, has dwindled, with only a handful commercial outlets open, reported some media on May 29, 2021. So far, over 400 000 people are said to have fled the city that has a population of about 670 000.

Nyiragongo volcano last erupted just a few days ago. The eruption sent lava down to Goma suburbs including its international airport. The latter, however, escaped with only some minor cosmetic damages. The eruption later subsided after reportedly claiming 32 lives. _________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate.
