Ex-President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia is dead, reported some African media. He died on June 17, 2021, in a military hospital in the capital Lusaka, according to the reports. He was 97.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda was the first president of independent Zambia. He came to power immediately after the country gained independence from Britain in 1964 and ruled the country under a one-party political system until 1991 when he stepped down after the country adopted multi-party politics.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda was a renowned Pan-Africanist who together with President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and President Samora Machel of Mozambique unwaveringly believed that their countries would never be truly independent until all other countries in Africa that were still under colonial rule were liberated. Accordingly, they staunchly supported armed and political struggles for liberation of, among others, Zimbabwe then Southern Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa from pathetic minority European rule.

He will be remembered as one of Africa’s greatest heroes. _________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
