Emmerson Mnangagwa Wins Zimbabwe's 2023 Presidential Election

Africa | Zimbabwe August 27, 2023

Emmerson Mnangagwa has won the presidential election of Zimbabwe's 2023 General Elections that were held on August 23 - 24, 2023. That was announced by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on August 26, 2023.

According to the announcement, Emmerson Mnangagwa who is the incumbent president of Zimbabwe under the banner of ZANU-PF party, won the presidential poll with 52.6% of the vote while his rival Nelson Chamisa of the opposition alliance Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) took 44%. The victory implies a second 5-year term in office for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

However, Nelson Chamisa has reportedly refused to concede defeat, with his CCC citing electoral irregularities. Particularly, the opposition alliance is said to have claimed, among others, that the announcement of the results of the presidential poll by ZEC was made before proper verification of the results was done.

According to Zimbabwe's Constitution, CCC can challenge the results of the presidential election in court. To have the results nullified, CCC must have adequate evidence to substantiate its claim of electoral irregularities.

In some countries in Africa, results of presidential elections can not be challenged in court, despite claiming to have multi-party electoral systems. So, in this context, one could say that the multi-party electoral system in Zimbabwe is comparatively well established, at least normatively.
