Delegation Of West African Leaders Fails To Resolve Mali’s Political Crisis

A strong delegation of West African leaders consisting of five presidents has failed to bring to an end Mali’s political crisis, reported some media on July 24, 2020.

The presidents of Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Niger landed in the capital Bamako on July 23, 2020 with the aim of mediating an end to the political crisis in the West African nation. The crisis involves violent anti-government protests that have so claimed several deaths. The protests led by an opposition group called June 5 Movement alias M5 have been ongoing for weeks now and calls upon the country’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to go.

Even earlier in the week, a delegation of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS led by Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan could not mediate a political deal between the government and the protesters.
