Egypt and a consortium of Egyptian and Germany firms have signed a $4.45 billion deal for construction of the first line of the country’s planned massive high speed railway network. That was reported by some media on September 1, 2021. The consortium consists of Egypt’s Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, as well as Germany’s Siemens Mobility.

The first line of the planned railway network covers 660km from Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh on the coasts of the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea respectively. Construction is expected to be completed in 2023.

As regards the planned high speed electric railway network per se, it covers 1750km and consists of four lines that serve different parts of the country. The network is expected to cost $23 billion to build and will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 250km/hour.
