CAR General Elections 2020 Commence Amidst Tense Security Situation

Polling stations in Central African Republic (CAR) opened on December 27, 2020 for the country’s general elections. The latter are 2-tier, entailing presidential and parliamentary elections. The elections are taking place amidst tense security situation following pre-election fighting between government troops and rebels.


There are over 12 000 UN peacekeeping troops stationed in the politically fragmented and polarized country.


Elsewhere in West Africa, polling stations also opened in Niger for the country general elections 2020. A staggering 30 presidential nominees are reportedly contesting to replace the incumbent President Mahamadou Issoufou who is stepping down after two terms in office.
