Botswana's Ex-President Ian Khama Gives Full Support To Opposition Ahead Of General Elections

In a dramatic twist at Botswana's political arena, the country's former president Ian Khama has given his full support to the opposition ahead of the country's forthcoming general elections due on October 23, 2019. That was reported by some media on October 14, 2019.

According to the reports, the ex-president at a political rally on October 13, 2019, in his home town of Serowe, publicly declared the demise of the ruling party Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) that he once led and co-founded by his father Sir Seretse Khama. Specifically he said and we quote:

"The party of the founding father of the republic is no more. It is dead."

Accordingly, ex-president Ian Khama reportedly called upon the people of Botswana to vote for the opposition parties Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) and Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) in the forthcoming general elections. In parts of the countries where BPF has no presence, the ex-president urged people to vote for UDC.

Earlier in 2019, ex-president Ian Khama defected from BDP to the opposition camp.
