Botswana Ruling BDP Decisively Ditched By The Electorate After 58-Year Reign
Botswana's ruling party, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), has been decisively ditched by the electorate there, after it has been on the throne totally uninterrupted for staggering 58 years. That is according to the latest provisional results of the general elections held on October 30, 2024, and reported by various local media on the evening of October 1, 2024. Final results of the elections are yet to be announced by the country's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC Botswana).
The provisional results show that the ruling BDP suffered unprecedented defeat in the general elections, miserably losing 34 of its 38 seats in parliament alias National Assembly it attained in the previous general elections, hence winning only 4 seats on this occasion. The incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi has reportedly conceded defeat of his party and promised peaceful and smooth transition to a new government in the diamond-rich African nation.
Furthermore, the provisional results show that Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has won the general elections with 36 seats hence absolute majority in parliament. A dramatic surge in parliamentary seats for the party, from 15 in the previous general elections. The victory paves the way for the party's presidential nominee Duma Boko's election by the parliament as Botswana's next president.
Taking the second place in terms of number of parliamentary seats hence becoming the country's new main opposition party is Botswana Congress Party (BCP) with 15 seats, according to the transition results. On the third position is Botswana Patriotic Front with 5 seats, while the fallen BDP with its 4 seats, is now down to the fourth position.
