Bangladesh Authoritarian PM Flees In Chopper And Quits. Illustration Of Significance Of Human Rights And Economic Growth In Governance
Rest Of The World | Commentaries | Human Rights August 5, 2024
Bangladesh authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (76) on August 5, 2024, made a fascinating dramatic escape from violent young protestors who stormed and looted her official luxury residence in the capital Dhaka, by fleeing the country in a helicopter and quitted. That was reported by some media.
The embattled PM is said to have fled to neighboring India to probably seek political asylum there. She fled and quitted after weeks of countrywide violent protests involving students and other young people who were disgruntled by her government. Reportedly, more than 300 people died in the protests.
PM Sheikh Hasina's reign that began in 2009, was praised for delivering incredible economic development in general terms, that made Bangladesh Asia's fastest growing economy. However, it was marred by high levels of non-inclusiveness, public sector corruption, and above all extreme authoritarianism. The latter included, among others, suppression and unlawful incarceration of opposition politicians and critics.
The fall of PM Sheikh Hasina supports the narrative that in politics nobody is indispensable. Particularly, it underscores that adherence to human rights is paramount in good governance anywhere in the world, with economic development albeit important having lesser significance to individual citizens. Significance of economic milestones by countries will also depend on how national incomes are distributed among the populaces. For instance, a low GDP of a country, that is evenly distributed among the populace, will be more significant to individual citizens, than a high GDP of a country, that is unevenly distributed among the populace hence benefited by only a few. This explains why some citizens in some medium or even low income countries may be more contented with their governments than those in some countries with high incomes. It is therefore totally meaningless to talk about GDPs without getting into how they are distributed among populaces!
Also, the fall of PM Sheikh Hasina illustrates that in the 21st century, authoritarianism has no place on earth to flourish. Where it still exists, it becomes just a matter of time before majority individual citizens adversely affected by it, get fed up and rise to get rid of it once and for all, no matter the cost. To this effect, the Internet will play a crucial role.
