AU Suspends Mali’s Membership
Africa | Mali June 2, 2021
African Union (AU) on June 2, 2021 suspended Mali’s membership to the continental body over the country’s return to military rule. That was announced in a statement by AU’s Peace and Security Council. The suspension that comes into effect immediately, would be lifted only when constitutional order is reinstated in Mali through formation of a new interim civilian government, according to the statement.
Mali officially returned to military rule on May 28, 2021 after the country’s Constitutional Court endorsed a military coup that took place on May 24, 2021, by declaring the coup leader Colonel Assimi Goita interim president. _________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate.
