45 people were killed in a stadium stampede during a funeral event for Tanzania’s late President John Magufuli, reported some Tanzanian media on March 30, 2021.
The deadly stampede is said to had taken place on March 21, 2021 in Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, as crowds of mourners forced their way into the stadium to attend the funeral event and pay their last respects to the late president. The dead included children, some as young as 5.
According to the reports, authorities there do not think they are responsible for the bloody stampede, instead they have blamed mourners who they argue used unauthorized entrances into the stadium, leading to overcrowding hence the stampede.
President John Magufuli died on March 17, 2021. After several funeral events including a state funeral in the capital Dodoma, he was eventually laid to rest in his hometown of Chato, northwest Tanzania, on March 26, 2021.
