Sudan's Main Opposition Parties Call For New Protests

Sudan's main opposition parties have called for new protests countrywide, to reiterate their demand for the country's president Omar al-Bashir to step down. That was reported by some world media on January 4, 2019.

Violent protests entailing bloody clashes between protesters and security forces have been ongoing in Sudan for some weeks now. The protests that began as popular expression of popular grievances against shortages and high prices of food, later took a wider dimension to encompass other serious political matters including demand for President al-Bashir to go after 30 years on the throne. Tens of people are reported to have died from the protests so far.

Notwithstanding, President al-Bashir who is also indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, has refused to go, but promised considerable political reforms and new elections in 2020. The promise, however, seems to be not enough for the protesters, particularly the opposition.
